Koffee With Arun

Here is Arun Samuel, Chairman and Managing Director of Wings Group of Companies unpacking for us the Wings story, in his own words.

Turning back the pages, you began as a basement gig, didn’t you?

Well, looking back I see how Wings which started with just three people working from a stark basement in a city full of opportunities, Bangalore. We built steadily from the ground up, rising up in the niche business of marketing communication, and the rest as they say is history.

Whom do you owe your success to?

No doubt, first the one and only, ever faithful God. Then the most amazing clients who chose to work with us, and our lovely people in Wings.

How has been the journey like?

Well, I have been in the industry for over 30 years now, working across various categories. Automobiles, FMCG, Healthcare, Household Durables, Mobile Telephony, IT, Real Estate and many others. Each sector throws up its own challenges and opportunities. That we were able to meet expectations and even go beyond is testimony to our innate capabilities to deliver as well as the faith our clients have reposed in us. Whenever we had to face hard options, they gave us the space to manoeuvre.

What is the Vision 2025 all about?

There is always hope and for us it is always built on strong foundations. Hope definitely is a good thing isn’t it. As Morgan Freeman says in ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, hope is a good thing, maybe even the best of things, and good things never die. We have spent some time casting our goals for Vision 2025 that we are aiming to accomplish in another two years’ time.

To be the leading brand building agency in India is one of our primary goals, as well as to go on and double our current turnover. As we do this, we will need human capital, so we are also looking at providing employment to around 10,000 people. Some of our key priorities is to build the Wings Towers and establish Wings Aviation on a solid footing in the private sector. A passion that I have is to setup and run hospitals, God has been kind and we have been able to start this process. And lastly, in our journey to take Wings to the world there are also plans in the pipeline to expand our global presence to over 12 countries.

Any life lessons you may want to share?

There are so many actually. In the field of brand activation and market communication I always wanted Wings to be a ‘Doer’ company that provides a wide range of solutions to our clients. In the end it is all about products getting the rightful market share. We always put the needs and concerns of our clients and their brands first. In essence, these form our building block.

Here I always went by the Chinese proverb, “ We have to win the Battles before we win the Wars.” This unfailingly has been our motto as we fight our battles in a very competitive market.

The idea of the Golden Eagle Brand Awards..

Having been in this space for over three decades, and given our close associations with marketing, branding and advertising partners and other relevant stakeholders Wings  has a unique industry advantage. Therefore it was natural and organic for us to think about instituting awards to honour the very best in this space.
